Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Office of Digital Learning ( ODL ) is a dynamic unit that supports innovation and online learning at the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business, assisting faculty in a variety of ways including integrating accessibility best practices and providing design, development, revision, research expertise to advance course and program goals.
Position Summary The Instructional Designer (ID) will work collaboratively with ODL staff members and university faculty to design Canvas components of online, hybrid and hyflex courses and provide course design and technical support for Smith faculty members. The successful candidate knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. The ID will be able to work on large projects or processes and complex problems; analyze problems/issues of diverse scope and determine solution; and implement best practices related to technology use in online teaching, including application assessment, pedagogy, deployment methodologies, and integration strategies.
The instructional designer works collaboratively with faculty and staff to develop courses that challenge students to assess complex business problems and deliver innovative solutions. The ID is primarily charged with developing and promoting strategies for integrating interactive and engaging content, both synchronously and asynchronously.
Course Development : - Work with academic directors, other instructional designers, and subject matter experts using best practices to design, develop, and/or manage course development projects.
- Review courses for alignment with established standards of quality.
- Assist faculty in course builds within the LMS (Canvas), including but not limited to: course design, use of templates, uploading course materials, developing assessments, and incorporating educational technology.
- Process requests for course reviews, transfers of course content, facilitating accommodations within the LMS , and other instructional design requests.
- Design and redesign courses for online delivery modes that include the incorporation of learning management system tools for instruction and communication.
- Design, create and deploy multimedia and interactive learning objects such as screencasts, vodcasts, podcasts, web resources and third-party instructional materials.
- Establish processes and procedures for data collection, data reduction, and data analysis

- Create tutorials in the form of Knowledge Base articles, videos, or other asynchronous resources to support the use and adoption of educational technologies.
Documentation, currency in the field, and other duties: - Engage in documentation and time tracking of consultations, projects, and other duties.
- Maintain currency in the field related to instructional design, assessment, data analysis, and accessibility.
- Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to using database and survey software for tracking and feedback purposes, representing the ODL at meetings and activities and engaging with professional organizations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree plus significant coursework in education, instructional design or related field.
Experience: - Minimum of 3 years’ experience in instructional design or instructional technology support.
- Experience in collaborating with teams and clients to manage expectations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Extremely well versed in the application of design methodologies including but not limited to: ADDIE model, SAM , backward design, e-learning blueprint, design thinking, and interactive learning experiences.
- Experience in designing authentic assessments and engaging course content.
- Ability to be creative, flexible, and innovative in course design.
- Highly proficient in computer skills including MS Office Suite and learning management systems.
- Ability to provide instructional, curriculum and technical design consulting services to subject matter experts (faculty).
- Excellent English-language verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, superior organizational skills, self-direction, and motivation are a must.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, work independently, and meet strict deadlines.
Preferences:
- Master’s degree in instructional design, distance learning, or instructional technology.
- Experience building business cases in a higher education environment.
- Knowledge of experiential and project-based learning models and frameworks.
- Knowledge of the Canvas learning management system will be beneficial.
- Demonstrated expertise in using authoring tools such as Captivate and Storyline to create sophisticated adaptive learning content.
- Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, data analysis, and time management.
- Driven by standards of excellence and committed to continuous improvement.
- Ability to foster faculty enthusiasm for and engagement in the use of innovative technologies for teaching.
