Position Summary: The Director for Government and External Relations will interact with local, state and federal legislative bodies and government agencies to represent and advance the University of Idaho and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). This position builds relationships that maintain an effective network to increase the level of funding, advocacy and other support for scholarly, creative and Extension activity from state and corporate sources while increasing the stature of CALS.
Internally, this position works in close collaboration with senior college and university leadership, University Research and Economic Development and government affairs staff, college advancement, and agricultural research and extension colleagues statewide. This position also serves as liaison between CALS and industry groups, commodity groups and associations that represent CALS in industry across Idaho. The Director of Government and External Relations is responsible for helping develop consistent messaging for key college initiatives and priorities and helping to operationalize a network of alumni, faculty, staff, students and other friends of the college.
The variety of Idaho agricultural and life sciences is reflected in the research and Extension programs being conducted by the college. The college serves needs in agriculture, life sciences, natural resources, families, youth and communities by integrating the functions of teaching, Extension and research.
This position reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and will work in close collaboration with a dotted line to University Government Relations.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor’s Degree in Government Affairs, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Political Science, Marketing, Communications, Law, Economics, or Agricultural and Life Science
- Five years of administrative and leadership in an organization with responsibilities for strategic planning, decision-making, and relationship building.
- Experience working in government relations or industry affairs.
- Experience accomplishing goals and objectives through leadership, promotion of climate and culture, communication, vision, and management.
- Experience with verbal and written communication including electronic media and experience coordinating with a variety of groups such as faculty, industry personnel and government officials.
- Experience working independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications: - Advanced degree in a field related to the position’s responsibilities.
- Capital campaign experience.
- Experience in public relations and marketing.
- Thorough understanding and commitment to the land-grant system and an understanding of the mission of the agricultural experiment station and UI Extension.
- Experience in working with a wide variety of groups.
- Broad experience or knowledge across agricultural and life science disciplines.
- Knowledge of the State of Idaho.
- Experience of professional achievement and leadership.
