Job Summary:

The Office of Data, Academic Planning & Institutional Research (DAPIR) is seeking a Data Systems Administrator to join our Enterprise Data Management team. The position will be instrumental in helping shape the future of UW-Madison's data landscape. Enterprise Data Management is in the process of modernizing several elements of our data platform and is looking for an experienced data professional to help us grow beyond traditional databases into new technologies and methodologies (data lake, data lakehouse, data fabric, etc.)

This role will be central to helping design, build, and maintain physical and virtual database systems and related data systems (AWS S3, etc.) in a hybrid cloud and on-premises environment, and will assist with the overall UW-Madison data platform to ensure data security and integrity. The Data Systems Administrator will develop related policy and procedure, facilitate training, and serve as a subject matter expert for related project planning. This person will also play a key role in proactively monitoring activity and performance to maintain responsible financial operations in cloud environments.

Responsibilities: Designs, develops, builds, and maintains one or multiple database systems and environments or assists with an entire application to ensure data security and integrity. Develops related policy and procedure, develops and facilitates training, and serves as a subject matter expert for related project planning.

  • 10% Develops data architectures and database management policies and standards
  • 10% Identifies and resolves data issues and upholds database-use guidelines
  • 20% Installs, configures, maintains, backs up, restores, and performance-tunes databases
  • 15% Implements complex security measures to safeguard digital information
  • 10% Monitors and analyzes database audit tables and logs and provides complex data warehousing support and data extraction
  • 5% Identifies, develops, and facilitates unit staff training opportunities in the effective utilization of databases
  • 10% Serves as a subject matter expert on database systems and procedures for new projects and facilitates planning
  • 10% Configures, integrates, and manages internal applications and cloud tools (AWS, Azure, etc.) for use in UW-Madison's broader data platform
  • 10% Monitors financial operations and performance of data systems and cloud platforms (FinOps)

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in database administration, cloud data management, or related field
  • Experience with database design, security, documentation, and coding in a cloud or cloud-hybrid environment


Preferred:

  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience in implementing new data systems and platforms
  • Experience migrating on-premises and legacy systems into cloud services and integrating cloud services into existing infrastructure
  • Experience managing both cloud databases (Snowflake, Redshift, etc.) and on-premise databases (Oracle, etc.)
  • Experience managing logical databases or lakehouses (Denodo, Dremio, etc.)
  • Experience managing cloud tools related to data management (AWS S3, ADLS, MPP clusters, etc.)


License/Certification:

Preferred

AWS - Amazon Web Services Certification

AWS/Microsoft/Google Cloud certifications preferred

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
